The classic Dory boat type was first
used by Portuguese fishermen
around 1760 to fish for cod.
The boats could be sailed or rowed
and were up to five meters long. They were adapted to the rough waters and surprisingly seaworthy despite their relatively smaller dimensions. They were mostly sailed with a lateen- or lug sail.
A big advantage of the Dories was that they were particularly light and could be nested inside each other on the deck of larger fishing vessels.
