Kurt Steiner Gründer von steinboot

Starting a new business in your 60s building wooden boats might not feel really intuitive or logical for most people and therefore I would like to briefly share the motivation behind my new endeavor with you:

I have spent my entire professional life in the wood industry, in various sectors ranging from the automotive supply industry in the natural fiber sector to load-bearing wood components.

Here you can find more information about my professional career.

In the past two decades I was consistently working as CEO, hired by companies that were in a difficult situation to say the least. Regardless of the industry, working under such circumstances is always difficult and draining.

A side project is needed to clear one’s head and get new energy, far away from the management hysteria. Building wooden boats is and has always been that right side project for me.

I already started restoring wooden boats and building iceboats in my early youth and quickly explored modern materials such as epoxy resins for wood fixings and the production of composite materials.

At the same time I have been, of course, a passionate sailor since childhood. During my sailing career I did not only sail wooden boats but also had longer excursions into the catamaran scene, with tornadoes, A-Kats and Formula 18.

This hobby has led to a well-equipped workshop over the years which is also the base of my current business and where my projects come to life.

You can find a short summary of my previous projects under previous projects. However, I would like to highlight the Stir Ven 22, which I built in my workshop and still use today to sail on Lake Wörthersee in Austria.

Finally, at the end of 2019, I decided to leave the management world and all the hassle that comes with it behind and focus on what experience has taught me that makes me truly happy - building wooden boats.

After the design by Francois Vivier fully convinced me (Stir Ven 22 is also by Vivier) and I really like this somewhat different, stress-free way of sailing, I chose Doris 5m from his collection for my first edition.

Fast forward and Francois Vivier is now my partner and together with regional suppliers I’m working on a limited edition of Doris 5m.

I completed the first Doris 5m model in 2020 and tested it extensively in light winds on Lake Wörthersee in Austria as well as under wilder coastal conditions on the Mediterranean Sea. The boat was completely convincing under all conditions.

You can find more information on the Doris 5m limited edition under our offer.
