DORIS 5M

Our Doris 5m impresses with its beautiful wooden look and loving details, but is still as easy to care for as a plastic boat. Thanks to the ‘lapstrake stitch and glue’ technique, it is made from high quality marine plywood and light local spruce.

 

The coating is made from first-class epoxy resins that protect it. It was designed by naval architect Francois Vivier, who interpreted it as the modern version of a classic Dory boat.

Doris 5m, ready for sailing and rowing:

The boat is mainly made of high quality and light marine plywood (okoume). The hull, the centerboard case (also the inside of the case) and the centerboard are coated on both sides with a transparent twill fabric and epoxy resin (West System). The inside is coated with a 2K clear lacquer with a high UV protective effect and on the outside a 2K polyurethane boat lacquer (International) is used.

 

The outside boat color can be customized. All solid wood fixtures, spars and oars are made of slowly grown, finely grained, local softwoods (spruce or fir). Only epoxy resin is used as glue.

 

Hardwood (ash or oak) is used for components that are subject to higher stress. Spars and oars are deeply oiled with Owatrol D1 and sealed with D2, which allows easy repair of any scratches or damage.

 

The oars are reinforced with fabric at the ends and coated with epoxy resin. The fittings (bow, rudder, oarlocks) that are fixed to the boat are made of marine bronze. Blocks and clamps are ball-bearing (Harken or Viadana) and the mainsheet block is a ratchet block.

 

Liros lines are used as running rigging. The boom and gaff are padded with leather at the chafing areas, as are the rack ring and the tiller. The tiller is also equipped with an infinitely adjustable rudder brake (tiller lock), which is extremely useful for rowing or single-handed sailing.

 

The jib (1.8m²) has a Dyneema bolt rope and is set flying. The sail tack is brought to the bow fitting with a hauler, the halyard is set as usual. This can be done while sitting comfortably, no gymnastics in front of the mast needed.

 

The main sail (7.6m²) has two reefs.

Trailer

A light, galvanized, unbraked single-axle trailer. Commercially available boat trailers are not really suitable for the transportation of Doris 5m without adaptation.

 

Our trailer is provided with specially designed polyamide rollers that do not damage the level floor of Doris 5m. Two pairs of inclined rollers center the boat so that the skeg of the hull snaps neatly into the rear roller of the trailer. This prevents the boat stern from slipping sideways during transportation. The bow locks into a padded plywood overlay. A belt winch is not really required to pull the boat up as it is very light but can be quite practical for placing it on the trailer.

The travel cover is made of waterproof and easily washable materials and is fitted tightly to the shape of the hull. It is fixed on the trailer frame with elastic bands. This prevents any fluttering, which would damage the paintwork during long transportation.

 

The cover needs a gable in the middle to prevent it from sagging and is therefore supplied with a substructure made of two plywood components.

 

These components are designed in a way that the mast can be placed in the middle as a gable. The oars are then placed on one side and the two spars with the sail attached on the opposite side.

 

Leather pads have been attached to the touch points to avoid any damage. Additionally, oars and spars are fixed with an elastic band to ensure that nothing moves in the hull and causes scratches, even during longer transportation.

 

The travel package also comes with neatly crafted protective covers for the rudder blade and the tiller.

A sculling oar is different from a normal oar. Its profile is symmetrical and hydrodynamically optimized. The end of the oar is coated with twill fabric, the rest of the oar is oiled with Owatrol D1 and sealed with D2.

 

Unlike in the picture, we have changed the mounting to make it more versatile for different sailors.

 

We now have a recess on the starboard and port side which is padded with leather. This moves the position a little deeper and both left-handed and right-handed people can easily scull. The oar is 2.8m long and can be stored between the two buoyancy tanks in the hull.

Slip trolley

If you don't want to travel with Doris 5m and you will keep it in a berth in the port, the simple slip trolley is certainly sufficient.

It is made of aluminum and is adapted to the slim dimensions of Doris 5m.
